Gill autie - painting & mosaic
johnbeethamup gill_autie

Through my love of animals, over the past ten years I have concentrated my paintings on dogs
and horses. My style, which is distinctive and contemporary allows the individual personality of
each animal to shine through.
The other medium I love working in is mosaic. I work in a very traditional method using
vitreous glass. It is a wonderful medium to work in and I love the jewel like qualities the glass
gives. I often use animals and birds as my subjects as their uncomplicated forms lend
themselves to this wonderful medium.
I regularly show my work in London and East Sussex. This years I will be showing work at the
Affordable Art Fair in Battersea.
I teach both painting and mosaic in Lewes at the Paddock Studios, for more information

David baker - handcrafted wooden boxes
upjohnbeetham wooden_box

I make wooden boxes and other small scale wooden pieces in my workshop near
Glyndebourne, East Sussex. I use mainly indigenous hardwoods and other sustainable
resourced timber. All my boxes feature decorative joints such as dovetails, finger joints
or splined mitres. Using darker and lighter woods together creates contrast. My jewellery
boxes feature removable inner trays which can be adapted to store different types
of jewellery.

I trained at Wimbledon and Brighton Colleges of Art and have worked as a college
technician before becoming a cabinetmaker in East London. For several years I
made one-off boardroom tables and cabinets for city firms. Later I moved to
Sussex and worked for local firms before setting up my workshop.

Rhoda studied textiles at The Royal college of Art from 1978 to 1980.This background
particularly in weaving is strongly reflected in her work, with an emphasis on pattern
and repetition.

Her ‘Paperscapes’ are predominantly white, low relief contoured maps constructed from
multiple layers of thick paper and card. Complex planning and attention to detail is crucial
and she enjoys the practical processes involved in constructing them.

numeral based pieces reflect her current obsession with numbers. “I like rooting
around second hand shops for numeral based games, maps, knitting patterns,
and paper ephemera involving numbers that I can incorporate into my work!

I studied Photography in the 1970’s and later was the founder and course leader in the A Level Photography for the LaSWAP 6th Form Consortium in North London for 10 years.

I split my time between Sussex and the Devoluy, in France, and find my work is influenced by both places. Lately I have concentrated in combining my photographs to form new images, often rendered in black and white and printed onto canvas.

A current preoccupation with horses and spaces seems to be an emerging theme but I am happy with anything that concentrates the viewer’s attention and perhaps gives them pause for thought.

I studied Commercial Graphics and Landscape Design and Amenity Horticulture and won a design award for a commercial project.
My experience as an Interior Designer has heavily influenced the emphasis on composition in my paintings.
My painting technique is achieved with a 'loose brush' and a varying weight of paint, together with the beautiful fluidity of the paint used.
The work may be described as 'investigative energy' with a focus which is an alive movement with the atmosphere and mood that a painting evokes.
References from photographs taken in my garden in the summer trigger shape and textures that eventually achieve the composition committed to canvas.

I exhibit at The Pantiles, Tunbridge Wells and have a collection exhibited at the 'Luniverre Gallery', Cord sur Ciel, South of France

whilst others like Padauk are hard and dusty but shine up beautifully once waxed.

      adele gibson - painter
nextup adele_gibson My work is drawn from the landscapes around Lewes and the South Downs where I live
and walk every day - the railway lands, the narrow paths around the old racecourse and
the view from Jill’s pond are among my favourites. I love to observe the changing light,
particularly the open skies and the shadows cast both by clouds and the natural folds
in the land.

I am inspired and fascinated by the quality of light and colour, and how these
change according to the season and weather. I paint mainly in oils to benefit from the
unlimited flexibility they give me in terms of texture and colour. Holidays provide a
change of visual scene and I particularly enjoy capturing coastal landscapes in Cornwall
and further afield where the sunshine and reflections provide different opportunities.

I have decided to concentrate on my own art work full time again.

I have been a keen bird watcher for a number of years and birds have become the main focus of my

I have been making pottery for the last six years with Mohammed Hamid at the Star
Workshops in Lewes, E.Sussex. The pots are made in stoneware. I like decorated pottery,
in the majolica tradition and have been influenced by the work of the Aldermaston pottery
particularly Alan Caiger-Smith and I have, developed designs based on the broad brush
strokes and calligraphic style typical of that pottery.

A second influence came from a visit to the ceramics museum in Barcelona where there
is a delightful collection of pottery dating from the fourteenth century to the present
day. Some designs use very old traditional images used in Spanish pottery.

Recently I have particularly enjoyed using calligraphy on pots, mostly for wedding gifts,
or other commemorations. The pots are all dishwasher and microwave safe..

It was whilst completing her degree in ceramics at Derby that Bethany found that she gained as much from filling sketchbooks as working in clay. She was particularly drawn to printed images and as a result now creates her own hand coloured relief prints. On occasions she will work from photographs as an initial inspiration and on others in a more direct manner but always in a personal way; every images tells a story.
Each print is produced by hand giving them a unique quality and forms a part of a limited series. Additional work with Indian inks adds detail and depth to these intense and highly evocative pieces of work.

I have been making pots in Brighton since the early 1970s and work from a studio next
to my house. I have always been interested in the idea of the miniature and concentrate
mainly on small-scale works, bowls and vases. I aim to make graceful forms with
restrained surface decoration. I often distort the piece after throwing to add an element
of asymmetry - a signature of my work.

I use a wide range of glazes: turquoise, a speckled cobalt blue, celadon, yellow, ash white
and a semi-matt white which I stain with tea to emphasise the crazing.

Over the years I have featured in many exhibitions, and I currently sell my work in galleries
in Brighton and throughout the UK.

A basic outline of these would be: Weddings, events and local scenery.
Sarah has a great love for architecture. I am especially fond of night photography; I use

way our minds work within a space and how it makes us feel. She also enjoy capturing shots
from her local surroundings and the seaside; many of them are black and white which she
feels brings out the texture and adds a touch of drama.
working in reportage and posed approaches She has covered a broad spectrum of events such

Born in the Kent countryside, before the motorways came, I have been involved in
image-making all of my life. I now live and work in Brighton. I have been woodcarving
since the great hurricane of 1987. In carving, it is good to feel part of a tradition that
spans the centuries and cultures. There is life already present in the wood, a sense
of permanence and endurance. I work primarily in oak, our hardest native wood,

carving almost entirely by hand. My work is figurative, the images often metaphorical.
In recent years I have worked on several large scale public commissions. Involving
research into local history, the sculptures become silent storytellers in the landscape.
I am interested in how we deal with the human condition, in the face of an indifferent
universe. I hope people find my work relevant to their own experience.

kelly sweeney - fine art screen prints
upnext kelly_sweeney

Kelly Sweeney is a Brighton based artist who studied Fine Art graduating in 2000 with a First Class Honors Degree. She is known for her unusual limited edition screen prints. All images are her own original drawings and are created using pen and ink. The scribbled creations that develop are illustrative in style and draw from the facets of nature that capture the artists attention. Ink is often applied to each print individually fusing the practices of printing, painting and drawing together. Recent work has become intricate and ornate developed using her imagination and obsession with detail to explore visual contradictions and relationships, for example forging the realistic with the fantastical and planned execution with spontaneous gestural mark-making. Inspiration for the work originates from an experience with something that will appeal to her sense of curiosity and intrigue. These are experiences that usually happen by chance. The artist aims to capture something about the character of the subject using symbology and imagery that emerges from the intricacy of the drawing. Kelly has exhibited around the UK including Nottingham, London and Brighton and was shortlisted and selected this year for the Cork Street Open Exhibition. The Hop Gallery in Lewes will be showcasing her first solo exhibition in November 2012.

johnbeethamup lucy_jade_sylvester From her Oxfordshire studio Lucy transforms the fragile forms, creating wearable pieces
using poppy seed heads, acorn cups, sycamore seeds, bees, stag beetles, and flies.
All the jewellery is created in solid silver and gold with moonstones, labradorite, pearls
and diamonds. The fine detail of her jewellery is enhanced by colouring the precious
metals, darkening the delicate patterns and textures and re polishing the surface.

Lucy was chosen as the Editors Choice at the Country Living Fair in London, and was
selected by Courvoisier The Future 500 with the Observer magazine, confirming her as
the leading designer for all those who love the natural world and our fabulous countryside.

Julie produces a wide range of decorative pieces for the home, using the techniques of fusing
and slumping glass. This involves sandwiching two or more layers of glass, placing enamels
and other inclusions at various levels, and then melting the glass to create a fusion of the
design. This is flat, so if required, the piece is fired a second time, to bend into or over a
ceramic mould. Each piece is unique and unrepeatable.

Carola van Dyke is the designer for Tiny Tulips, which can simply be described as a creative company
with a love for colours, exuberant & vibrant in style, using original textiles which are then created
into eye-catching, quirky designs. Tiny Tulips specialises in groovy baby booties, stunning cushions,
made out of panels with appliquéd flowers & birds, throws and a few handbags. She finds her
fabrics in her native country, The Netherlands, and together with beautiful vintage material they
become something else.
Living near the South Downs has inspired her to pick up painting again, and she now takes
commissions for small landscapes, buildings and house portraits, all of course in the same
exuberant colours as her textiles.

      rachel ward sale - bookbinder
upnext rachel_ward_sale I studied Art, Design and Bookbinding at The University of Brighton from 1977 – 81.
In 1980 I was First prize and Silver medal winner in the Designer Bookbinders Competition and was subsequently elected as one of the first Licentiate members  of D.B.
I won first prize for the open choice book in the DB competition in 2003 and 2004, winning the Mansfield
medal too in 2004. In 2005 I was elected a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders.

Since leaving college, I have worked as a self employed bookbinder, undertaking a wide variety of projects. Although a large proportion of my current work involves the repair and rebinding of old books, my main
interest remains centred around the creation of fine designed bindings.
Texture, both natural and manufactured, has been a recurring influence on my work. Recently I have been concentrating on this element of design, creating bindings using foundobjects  to impress into, or print onto, the surface of leather. The unpredictable and random nature of these techniques, produce very tactile results.

In the past I painted in oils; more recently I started working in acrylic and exploring printmaking,
mainly monotype and collagraph. I am strongly influenced by air, light and colour. My subjects
are often flowers, the sea and the decorative and the sense of fun found in children's parties.

anna wilson-patterson - paintings and prints
nextup anna_wilson_patterson

Anna lives and works from her charming studio gallery in the tranquil village of Herstmonceux, Sussex. Her
immediate environment inspires her paintings and prints. Dozing longdogs, kitchenware, the dramatic
landscape of the South Downs and nearby coastline. She walks the fields every day at dawn and dusk, with
her elegant sight hounds, observing the seasons change.

ŒMy paintings and prints are inspired by the texture, shape and colours of daily life. Everyday objects sit
on windowsills stirring memories of people and places. I enjoy printing hounds, plus return often to the
coast at Hastings, Rye and Dungeness.

my work starts as an observational line drawing which is then repeatedly abstracted
until it evolves into designs for jewellery. Linear land and seascapes are the inspiration
behind much of my work along with diverse visual references collected in my sketchbooks.
The silver pieces are fused and soldered sterling silver which is oxidized and polished.
The enamel pieces use the process of champlevé. This involves enamelling over engraved
silver. The engraving produces a light reflective surface which allows light to reflect through
transparent coloured enamel. The enamel is fired onto the surface of the piece and then the
surface is ground back to the level of the surrounding metal. The enamel is built up in fine
layers each fired separately. i graduated on the wood, metal, plastics and ceramics course
at brighton university. I teach jewellery and enamelling at Sussex Downs College eastbourne
and at my studio in Seaford, East Sussex.
